Since March 2012, 5 Pointz has been fighting in court to keep the Graffiti Mecca safe from demolition but on October 9th 2013, New York City council has given the permission for the destruction of the 5 Pointz and replace it with luxury apartments in the up and coming neighborhood of Long Island City.

More details on 5 Pointz:

To briefly explain the situation: the 2 owners Jerry and Wolkoff (father and son) want to generate more money with the construction of 2 large luxury building on one side and a graffiti artist organization called 5Pointz on the other side who wan to preserve this unique place in the world.

If I remember right 5 Pointz is simply the graffiti Mecca on a world scale just as I explained in this article: 5Pointz New York

Why the city council approved the destruction of 5 Pointz?

Simply because it’s a 400 millions dollars project in order to renovate these buildings.

What type of building will take place?

It’s simply 2 large buildings that will create 1000 new apartments and each building will be more than 40 stories high.

Was there any compromise?

Today, the only compromise by Wolkoff regarding the graffiti artists is to allow the new building to be tagged by the most worldwide recognized graffiti artists.

What’s the moral of the story?

By accepting this deal, I personally think that the Wolkoff are more clever or greedy since they that both buildings will be unique and inevitably they can easily sell them higher than the actual market!!!

It’s always sad when money takes over art.

When 5Pointz will be destroyed?

It’s scheduled to be destroyed by the end of this year (2013), so if you happen to travel to New York in the next coming weeks, don’t hesitate to go and take some pictures. 😉
