The Hotel New Yorker  – A JP and Corinne good tip in New York

How to describe the Hotel New Yorker built in the 30s?

It is a hotel with a cosmopolitan clientele. As the hotel offers a variety of rooms (with different rates), you will find people from different continents, nationalities, and any social class.
We met with German, English, American, French, Italian, Scandinavian… all greeted each other with a “hey!”
It’s not the cheapest hotel in New York, nor the most expensive.
It is a perfect hotel for those not looking for a too modern place to stay. There are no robots for bags or check-in on a big screen.

What are the conveniences at the Hotel New Yorker?

The hotel has a fitness room and a transportation service. You can buy postcards and other souvenirs at a good price in the store located in the basement.
There is a breakfast room on the 39th floor of the hotel, offering a magnificent view of the Hudson River, and you can catch a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty.

The hotel is enormous. There are a lot of elevators to get to all floors of the hotel. To avoid “traffic jams” in the mornings, the elevators on the left go up to the 21st floor and the elevators on the right to the upper floors.

The décor is a bit “out of time.” They did some work to renovate the hotel, but it still looks old. The art-deco style mainly inspires it, and I liked it a lot.

How are the rooms of the hotel New Yorker?

We were in a “Tower Suite” on the 39th floor of the hotel. It is about 42 m2 with a bedroom and a living room with a sofa bed. In each room, there is a flat-screen TV. You will also find a refrigerator. The bed and sofa are very comfortable and the bed too.

The bathroom is quite old (marble-finished bathroom) but very clean, like the whole room.

The staff does an excellent job, and everyone is very friendly.

How is the New Yorker hotel service?

Nothing to say. The staff is very competent. We never had to complain.

There are over 900 rooms, and the hotel staff can be pretty busy. We considered it normal and did not mind waiting a bit when we asked for something… I say that because we have read bad comments on the internet against this hotel on this point, but you’re on vacation, so “relax” 😉

How we booked our room at the New Yorker?

We booked it in January, a planned trip for August. We reviewed several websites and contacted the hotel to take advantage of their offers. In May, we read on the “Facebook” page that we could get a better room at a lower price … So we called the hotel back to change our booking or cancel the reservation we had. Eventually, they let us take advantage of the offer 😉

So my advice is to check the prices well and talk with the managers of the New Yorker. They are very friendly  😀

What are the advantages of the hotel New Yorker?

The hotel is located at 8th Avenue and 34th Street: you will be near the Madison Square garden, Penn Station, shopping areas, and many attractions (ESB, Times Square …).

In our view, what we liked:
– It’s perfect for everyone because there are many activities nearby with a “quiet” environment.
– They control the access to the lifts, which is an excellent point.
– It’s clean.
– Ideal for families.
– Access to public transportation.
– Great view… if you have a room on the 39th floor and above 😀

What are the “negative” points of the hotel?

Despite heavy investments to renovate the hotel, some parts look very old or poorly made.

Address: 481 8th Avenue & 34th Street, New York, NY 10001

Please note that the Windham New Yorker charges an extra $35/night plus taxes as “resort fee” (Fitness access, Internet, Phone calls).

Conclusion

If we go back to New York, we surely will book a room at the Hotel New Yorker. The view from our room, the atmosphere, the place itself, we liked everything.

Anyway, we are not responsible if the hotel disappoints you. We only share our experience with you.
