If you’re landing at Newark Airport (NJ) and just like an arrival at JFK, you have many transportation options to get to Manhattan including: cab, taxi shuttle, bus and subway system.
Cab transfer between Newark airport and Manhattan:
Cab transfer is the first and most pricey option to and from Newark airport.
It will take you straight from Newark airport to your hotel or apartment in no time in a personalized manner.
It’s expensive. To drop you off in Manhattan, it will cost you around $50 to $70 and that’s without tips and tolls. Be prepared to pay a total around $70 to $90.
Book a private transportation to Manhattan
While you get our of the airport, several private taxi companies will approach you to offer you their services. You’ve got to be careful since not all of them are reliable
If you want to have a private transportation to your hotel or apartment, I recommend that you book this service with CarmelLimo. It’s a reliable company providing an excellent service and at a good price.
It will be better for you to pay on Internet so you won’t have to pay anything upon your arrival.
They have 9 vehicles for 1 to 14 people: sedan, mini-van, SUV, limo.
A private taxi for 1 to 4 people costs from $46, plus $12 for tolls and $7-8 for tips. Around $65 total price.
To take your taxi, you have to get out the airport and go towards the Pick Up Area.
Once outside the airport premises, you have to call the company at the phone number they gave you when you booked.
In less than 5 minutes, your taxi will arrive with your name printed on a sign.
– CarmelLimo provides a private service for 1 to 14 people.
– It picks you up on time.
– It’s a great option if your hotel or apartment is in Brooklyn or Queens (Astoria and Long Island City)
Taxi shuttle transfer between Newark airport and Manhattan:
The second option, the Taxi shuttle, is revealing to be the most practical solution.
It will take you from the airport to your hotel without having to walk for $17, 10 per person.
The only negative side is that you might be the last one to get off the van if your destination is scheduled to be the last one. Count around 45 min before getting to your hotel but on the other hand this is your opportunity to enjoy the streets of New York right away!!!!
What you need to know: Kids pay full price after 3 years old.
Like many other things, if you want to fully prepare your trip, book your shuttle now. This way, you won’t have to spend cash right away on American soil. In addition, you won’t be paying exchange fees since you’re paying in euros if you’re Europeans travelers.
AirTrain and Subway transfer between Newark airport and Manhattan:
AirTrain and subway are your 3rd solutions.
With public transportation, you’ll enter the New York life of daily commuters from New Jersey who take public transportation back and forth for work.
So here’s a great tip if 3 of you are traveling together: each AirTrain ticket costs $7.75 one way or $15.50 round trip. But, an Airtrain card is available for $25 for 10 trips and can be used up to 4 people at the same time. So, if 3, 4 or 5 of you are traveling together it’s cheaper since it will only cost you $25.
The AirTrain fare changed on November 1st, 2019, and I don’t know yet if the 10-trip card will be replaced but the Unlimited AirTrain Metrocard for unlimited AirTrain rides ($40).
It’s a longer trip than the other options, although it all depends on the location of your hotel. In addition, you’ll have to carry your luggage.

What you need to know:
“Unlimited Ride 7 days Metrocard” is not available at Newark airport. You’ll have to purchase it later on since the Metrocard is made for NYC and Newark is in NJ and doesn’t belong to the NY urban area.
Bus transfer between Newark airport and Manhattan:
The bus is the 4th option.
The bus is a real good tip to get to the heart of Manhattan quickly for the great price of $30 round trip per person or $17 one way.
To take the bus, follow the signs “Newark Liberty Airport Express”.
Watch out, because there are 2 lines leaving from Newark:
– Take the line with the stop: Port Authority Bus Terminal, Bryant Park and Grand Central.
Buses leave regularly every 15 to 30 min, the ride takes about 30 min if there’s no traffic otherwise count 45 min during rush hours.
Buses run from 4 am to 1 am (no buses run for 3 hours at night)
Important: For the RETURN, if you’re planning on taking the BUS, make sure to ask an assistant at Newark (upon arrival on American soil) for a bus schedule sheet according to your stop.
