A little history about Luke’s Lobster:
This little American fast food chain was created like most concept businesses, starting with one restaurant.
Luke is an American from the state of Maine (a state located in the extreme Northeast part of the US). His father was a Lobster Man, which means that he raised and fished lobsters and so Luke used to help him with his work.
After moving to New York for his studies, Luke settled in the East Village and decided to create his first business at the age of 26: not a burger fast food restaurant, but a lobster one!!! Original, isn’t it? 🙂
Right away, it became a real success in this very trendy neighborhood.
He, then developed his activity with the creation of 6 additional Luke’s Lobster restaurants in NY, 2 locations in Washington and 1 in its suburb. Now there are more Luke’s Lobster, even in Japan and Taiwan!
After meeting Luke in person, I can say that he’s a very easy going guy, friendly and laid back, a true reflection of his restaurants.
Regarding his restaurants, all crustaceans come from Maine since Luke’s family (cousin and uncle) owns a fish and seafood business. The delivery takes about 24 hours by truck to reach New York in an effort to have the freshest products.
What can you eat at Luke’s Lobster?
The store displays a lobster sign, but that’s not the main product in the restaurant.
Luke also offers seafood like crab and shrimp.. Both not bad at all 🙂
You can also enjoy:
– Shrimp roll
– Crab roll
– Lobster roll
– Chips and pickles
– All dish are served with cocktail sauce
They also sell beers, regular sodas and other soft drinks from Maine.
My friend and I ordered the $22 menu that includes: ½ shrimp roll, ½ crab roll, ½ lobster roll, chips, cocktail sauce and drinks. I ordered a lemon lime soda and my friend a coke. 🙂
Beware, they use a lot of pepper on their sandwiches so if you don’t like that too much, make sure to mention it when ordering.
How’s the decoration at Luke’s Lobster restaurant?
The East Village restaurant is quite small.
There are only 8 “lobster seating” if you’re ordering to stay, and of course, you can always order to go.
The music is a bit loud and they usually play rock and old school tunes.
The rest of the decoration is tacky but really cool. They managed to create an ocean theme with the traditional yellow rain coat, fishing nets, life preserver, pipe and a collage of menus on the walls.
If you want to see your name on the wall then you’ll have buy 10 menus. It’s just like a loyalty program for regular customers who will have the honor to have their name written on the wall of the restaurant.
Who comes to eat at Luke’s Lobster?
Once again, I didn’t get the chance to visit all Luke’s restaurants, but they were mostly locals in the East Village location!!!
That’s the great thing about it, this is not a tourist trap.
It’s always better to eat among New Yorkers rather than eating with some tourist family you bumped into last night on the Empire State Building, no? 🙂 🙂
