New York is a great city for shopping and if you add sales then that’s even better!!
In shops and outlets, prices are already low compared to European prices so if you can enjoy additional savings on your trip to New York then why not?
It is especially true for American brands. Therefore, it’s always interesting to spend a few hours or more shopping in New York 🙂

Where can you find sales in New York?

There are 3 main locations to shop in New York and find good sales:
On 34th Street close to Macy’s between Madison Square Garden and the Empire State Building, of course this includes Macy’s.
On Broadway between Union Square and Canal Street.
In Times Square between 43rd Street and 50th Street.
Also try 5th Avenue, Wall Street, Lexington Avenue and Brooklyn. Overall, these 3 main locations gather the coolest and cheapest stores in New York.
Here’s a map below to locate these 3 main locations:

Which stores in New York are offering sales?

Most stores offer sales however, most bargains are found in clothing and shoe shops.
You’ll find deals in the most famous department stores including: Century 21 (no official reopening date yet), Burlington, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Nordstrom Rack, and more.

To find additional stores, don’t hesitate to check my section on New York Shopping Tips.

In addition, you can visit well-known outlet stores. The latest are a great way to find designer clothing at unbeatable prices all year long.

Choice of outlets

The closest one is Empire Outlets; however, it just opened in 2019 and there are not as many stores as the other two outlets.
You may prefer to take a trip to Woodbury Premium as an opportunity to get out of NYC on a bus and see unique landscapes beyond the city.
Finally, Jersey Garden is an indoor outlet mall, the ideal place to shop when it’s very cold (below zero) in winter or extremely hot in summer (90 or more). Unlike Woodbury, an outdoor mall might be a good option if the weather is pleasant.
Both are good and have similar stores, so it’s really up to you! 🙂

There is no doubt that you’ll find some great sales in these outlets. However, it’s worth the trip in terms of prices.
Of course, that is if you find items that you like and fits you 🙂
It’s worth a try!!!

One last New York shopping tip during sales

Even if it’s not a great shopping tip, it might help you while you shop. If you’re planning to go on a shopping spree in New York, then do pack basic necessary items in your suitcase, or you won’t be able to bring everything back home! 🙂
I hope you can travel during these dates and if you can’t, don’t worry there are always some good deals available in most stores all year long.
Again, even if it’s not sale season, shopping in New York always has advantages and it’s always fun 🙂
And don’t forget to check my post in which I give you coupon codes to buy a pass, visits, get concert and game tickets at a lower price!

You can go on the same day or during the weekend. Woodbury is a good option but if it’s cold outside, Jersey Gardens could be better. It’s a mall with outlet stores.

    Hello,

    I’ve read up that Boxing day sales aren’t really a thing in America, So would I be better off at shopping on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day to maximise my savings? I typically like when the outlets have additional savings going on, like when Tommy hilifer has an additional 25% off when you spend $250 etc;

I was also wondering if Macy’s still display their holiday shop on the 26th December so I can get Christmas decorations on clearance.

    Thanks
    • TeamMemo says:
      Hi Sarah,

You’re right, boxing Day is not a thing but you’ll find good sales in between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.I won’t be able to tell you now if they will have additional sales, but you can always buy a coupon booklet at Jersey Gardens outlet to be granted extra savings. It is worth it!

Macy’s still display its Christmas windows. I went to Sears yesterday and they already have 40% off on their Christmas decorations. I have to check it out for Macy’s but I’m pretty sure it’s the same.
  18. Jessica says:

Thank you for all the help.
I have a question, is good buy technology like a computer or a cellphone during the Black Friday? What store are the best? What sales can I expect for the technology during the Black Friday ?
    Thank you so much
    • TeamMemo says:
      Hi Ana María!

Yes, the best prices will be during Black Friday or the following Monday (Cyber Monday, with sales online).

My favorite store is Best Buy. They always offer good deals, bundles… I bought a new PC last year thanks to the sales, I saved around $400!
  21. Liliana says:
Hi I am going to New York for November 18-22 this year will I be too early for Black Friday sales? Planning on shopping the whole time and staying in Times Square, would appreciate tips! X
    • TeamMemo says:
      Hi Liliana,
Yes it will be a little bit too early for Black Friday Sales. But you can always go to Century 21, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Burlington (check the stores around Union Sq) to find very good deals 😉
  22. Bell says:
I’m visiting NY one week after Fashion Week ends (Sept. 19-23, 2018). I was curious to learn if Fashion Week generates any sales or clearances after it wraps up. Are there any sales that you would recommend? Thanks in advance.
  23. Lewis says:

  26. Amber Khan says:
Hi i m travelling to nyc on 14th july for first time pls advice which are the best places to shop and have halal food shop for kids makeup
    • TeamMemo says:
      Hi Amber,
In this same post you have a map with the best places to shop 😉

In NYC you have a chain called The Halal Guys, you can give it a try.

For cosmetics in general (I don’t know for kids), you can go to Cosmetic Market.
  27. Fiona says:
Can you give an idea of the magnitude of sales that we can expect, this is in terms of the percentage.
  28. Maha says:
Hi there. Thanks for the info. And I fee the comments have covered just about the entire calander. Except the period I’m arriving. Are there usually any sales mid to end of July? Especially at the department stores like Macy’s?
We are coming from Australia for about 10 days with a huge emphasis on shopping and trying to work out where would be good to shop.
    • TeamMemo says:
      Hi Maha,
There’s no specific sales by the end of July but it’s not a problem because you will always find good prices. You can go to the stores I recommend in Manhattan (Century 21, Burlington), around Union Square (Marshall, TJ Maxx, Nordstrom Rack).
If you’re staying for ten days, you can also make a day trip to Jersey Gardens or Woodbury, two outlets near NYC. Click on the links in this post 🙂
  29. Johanna says:
    Hello,

I’ll be arriving in New York exact on the black friday they which means I’ll be missing the best shopping day. The question is, where could we get a good deal on the weekend and Monday and Tuesday after black friday? I’m especially interested in Burberry and we love bags and shoes! 😀
    Thank you for any advice!
    Johanna
    • TeamMemo says:
      Hi Johanna,
The sales are going on during all the weekend following Black Friday. You may want to go to Jersey Gardens Outlet or Woodbury, this is where you’ll find the best offers.
  30. Jessica says:
Hi. I have been thinking about visiting NyC in June 12-17 or sometimes during the last 2 weeks of August. The focus will be clothes, shoes and bags. Im also going to look for a short prom dress/cocktail dress. Which time would be better when it comes to sales? Or do you recommend another time than those I have been thinking about?
    • TeamMemo says:
      Hi Jessica,
By the end of August you will have some special sales related to “Back to School”.
You can go to an outlet (Woodbury or Jersey Gardens), and you’ll always find good deals. They have nice stores where you’ll may find a nice dress. I like Nordstrom Rack for shoes and bags, there’s one in Union Square: 60 E 14th St, New York, NY 10003 or Century 21 by the Lincoln Center.
  31. Irma says:
    Hi
Thanks for all the great shopping tips!

I want to come around July 4th sale week but the flight from Europe is quite steep around this period. Do you think I still can score some good deals if I visit 1 or 2 weeks earlier (mid-end of June)? Or is the sale during this period is significantly better and might worth to spend a little extra to catch the beginning of the sale? Say, I stay until 2 / 3 July.

    Thanks in advance!
    • TeamMemo says:
      Hi Irma,

You will find good deals the weekend before and after the 4th of July and there’s always a “sales” or “clearance” section so you don’t have to worry about not being in NYC on the 4th of July 🙂
  32. Naseem says:
Hi are there any sales from 10 till 20 dec?
  33. Alishba Farhan says:
I am going to visit New York from late March to April . Are there any good sales in New York at that time . Specifically on brands like adidas, vans , polo , tommy hifiger and other clothing and shoes brands. Also which locations and stores do you recommend
    • TeamMemo says:
      Hi Alishba,
Even if there’s no specific sales date during your trip, you can go to the outlets as I mention in the post you’re commenting.
For example in Van’s stores they always have “Buy One Get One” 50% aka BOGO 50% 🙂
  34. Stanley says:
Great info!! Im actually moving to NYC from Miami, so not that winter prepared! Any place I could find some great winter gear for men during these times??
  35. Lisa says:
Hi, I am planning to organize a group trip from Sweden with focus on.. of course shopping:) It would be nice to go during a sales period. I am thinking about April or May 2018. Do you have any idea which period (4-5 days stay) that would be good for us?
    • TeamMemo says:
      Hi Lisa,
I understand the focus or your trip 😀
Well, by the end of May you have the Memorial Day Weekend with interesting sales. If you’re not going to NY on those dates, don’t worry, you can go to outlet stores outside Manhattan and find very good prices all year long. You can organize a day-trip to Jersey Gardens or Woodbury. A friend of mine even bought a new suitcase to keep shopping !
In New York you can stop by Century 21, Marshall, TJ Maxx, Burlington… They always have very good prices on the most famous brands.
Stay tuned, I’ll be updating this post with the dates for 2018 😉
In the meantime, don’t hesitate to contact me if you have more questions.
  36. Boredatwork says:
    Hi
I am visiting NYC on 22nd Nov and wondered if it would be worth going to Woodbury common on Thansgiving. What are the sales like. I have emailed Woodbury common and they advised that the opening times are 9am on thanksgiving through to 10pm on black friday. Do the sales start on the Thursday?
    • TeamMemo says:
Hi, It would be much better to go for the Black Friday. You can find some stores on 34th St open late the night before, you can combine going there and on Black Friday, head to the outlet.
  37. Liz says:
How much sales tax is there on clothing in NYC?
    • TeamMemo says:
      Hi Liz,

NYC.gov explains it better than me 😀

The total sales and use tax rate in New York City is 8.875%.

      This includes:
      – New York City local sales and use tax rate of 4.5%
      – New York State sales and use tax rate of 4%
      – Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District surcharge of 0.375%

There is no sales tax on an item of clothing or footwear that costs less than $110. An item of clothing or footwear that costs $110 or more is subject to the full 8.875% tax rate. Sales tax is calculated per item, so even if you buy two or more items that add up to $110 or more, you only pay tax on the items that individually cost $110 or more.
  38. Rajae says:
Is there au sales between 31th octobre To 6th novembre? Thanks
  39. Ledy says:
    Hello,

I am planning a trip to NYC this year, probably in October or November. When would be the best time for shopping in October/November? Which locations and stores would you recommend for Tommy Hilfiger, CK, Armani, Ralph Lauren etc?

    Thanks
    • TeamMemo says:
      Hi Ledy,
If you want to get the best prices, you may want to go to NYC in November during the Black Friday sales!!
For the type of brands you’re searching for, I recommend that you go to Jersey Gardens.
  40. Kirat says:
I am visiting NY from August 10 to October 31. When is the best time to make a trip to Woodbury Commons to make the most of the sales?
  41. pat says:
    Hi
I will be visiting New York in a week’s time and I am wondering if I could get suitable clothes for the office and some casual wears. I am a woman of 48yr and wear between sizes 20 and above. really depending on the cut.
    thanks.
    • TeamMemo says:
      Hi Pat,

Yes, you can find everything in NY. Your best bet is going around Union Square where there’s a lot of stores like Burlington, Marshalls… Century 21 is a good option too, the one near the Lincoln Center (Upper West Side) is smaller and not so crowded.
  42. Connie says:
    Hellow
Thanks for the wonderful tips, i was in NYC just for a week from 25th June – 3rd July 2017 and could not get enough of its beauty and shopping, could not be able to do everything in one week time. I am planning to come back this August 25th to Sept 8th, guess the two weeks will be sufficient to do shopping and sightseeing. My questions are by that time will i be able to get summer clothes, shoes, handbags on sale prices?
    Thanks in advance
    • TeamMemo says:
Hi Connie and welcome to the club!! You’re another NYC addict!! 😀

Yes you will be able to find summer clothes by the end of August, you’ll be there at the perfect dates for the Back to School sales!

Don’t hesitate if I can help you planning your trip 😉

Great article! Just what I needed. Planning a trip to NYC and want to get some shopping done. How long would it take to get through the three major locations you mentioned in your article?

Also,is it best to stay in the city itself since that’s where the shopping areas are or would it make sense to stay near JFK and commute everyday to the city?
