Smorgasburg, a delicious option to eat out in New York

If you are looking for a place to eat during the weekend, you must go to Smorgasburg. What is this? If the word sounds quite original, the concept is very simple, and I am sure you will love it.

What is Smorgarsburg?

Created by Jonhattan Butler and Eric Demby, the founders of the Brooklyn Flea, Smorgasburg is a market that attracts about 20-30,000 people over the weekend.
Admission is free and you will find about 100 local vendors preparing salty and sweet dishes, different cuisines of the world (American, Vietnamese, Mexican, Greek …).
The creators of the market explained in the magazine The Village Voice that the word Smorgasburg does not mean anything.

Smorgasburg started in 2011 as a derivative of Brooklyn fleas. Instead of finding furniture and clothes or fruits and vegetables, the idea is to propose only prepared food.
This concept now exists in Crown Heights, Los Angeles and in Japan.

When and where is it?

As it is outdoors, the market is available from April until the end of October:
– Friday from 11:30 am to 7:00 pm at the World Trade Center,
– Saturday from 11am to 6pm in Williamsburg (90 Kent Ave, Brooklyn),
– Sunday from 11am to 6pm at Prospect Park (Breeze Hill).

What can you eat?

The question should be “are you hungry?”.
Really, there are so many vendors that it’s hard to choose. In my opinion, everything smells delicious, so I look at the dishes bought by others and try to find it or simply ask.

I always want to eat everything!

There are more exotic creations such as ramen burgers, lobster sandwiches, donuts with unusual flavors …

Once you have your food, you can take it where you want. I prefer the place in the photo, on one side of the East River and with the New York skyline in the background.

Admission is free.
The dishes are good but a little expensive, well, it’s New York.
If you have a bottle of water, you can fill it for free in the market.
Most sellers do not accept payments by card.
Alcohol consumption is limited to an area controlled by a person who verifies ID.

I know there may be many people, but once you buy your food, you can take it to a quieter place, enjoy the food and the relaxed atmosphere. To get to Williamsburg, you can use the NYC Ferry, very economical and with a pleasant ride on the East River.
