Effective July 8th 2014.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has implemented tighter security measures for overseas passengers carrying electronic devices into U.S. bound flights.

What’s this all about?

Passengers who attempt to bring cell phones and other electronic devices aboard the aircraft will be asked to power on those devices, and powerless devices will not be permitted onto the plane.

Which electronic devices will be under inspection?

All kinds: Laptops, tablets, smartphones, cell phones, e books, IPods and any music or video reproducer, photo cameras, recording cameras…

The electronic devices in registered luggage will be under inspection as well?

The TSA will be checking only the electronic devices going with you into the cabin.

What if you bring an electronic device without batteries or power?

According to TSA’s new rule, they will give you two choices: Leave your device with TSA’s agents or miss your flight.

Tough decision uh?

If you have your charger with you, it won’t happen anything. No worries 🙂

Applying the new safety rule:

I haven’t taken any flights since the 8th of July, so I don’t know exactly how the new safety rule is applied. Anyway, you should not be worried about this measure at all.

Why? If you want to use you electronic devices on the airplane, the best thing to do is to charge them before taking your flight.

Which airports will apply those safety controls?

All airports that provide flights to the US, including New York, have to implement the new safety measure.

Flight passengers in transit in a US airport, or arriving to the US as a final destination will be controlled before departure.

Is there any other TSA measures?

Yes! TSA invites all airports to keep paying special attention to passengers’ shoes.

As most of you may know, many airports applied the “shoes control” already. In fact, I recommend that you wear socks if you are traveling to the US, if you don’t, you will be walking barefoot in the control area of the airport. 🙁

Why is this new measure has been taken by the U.S. government?

U.S. officials say the new rules are necessary because of increased concerns over possible terrorist threats.

 Conclusion:

I recommend that you have all your electronic devices fully charged before traveling to the U.S. or New York.

Now you are ready! Go visit New York!

Memo

My fist trip to New York was in 2007 when I was working for an airline company. I was born in the US, I lived in Mexico, in Europe in between Belgium, Spain and France… Well, let’s say I know about travelling! I bring my experience of NYC to the blog, to provide the best travel tips you could imagine!
