Whole Foods Market: a good place to eat organic food in New York

If you are looking for a supermarket for groceries shopping or for food to take home, you will find what you need in Whole Foods Market.

It is a store that I like!

There are 8 Whole Food Markets in New York.

All the pictures in this article were taken in the Bowery WFM, between Lower East Side, Soho and East Village.

Where has been created Whole Foods Market, and what is its concept?

The WFM was founded in Austin, Texas, at the beginning of the 80’s. Then it appeared in big cities in the same area (Houston, Dallas), and in California in the late 80’s, and for the rest of the country, till the 90’s. The first WFM in New York is the one from Chelsea, opened in 2001.

Today, there are 8 stores in New York, 387 in the US and in the world (UK and Canada), it has more than 80,000 employees. It’s the biggest “organic” market chain in the whole world.

WFM supports fair trade, and requires their dealers; respect of the animal treat regulations, gives social advantages to its employees, 5% of its total earnings goes to charity, and tags over the GMO products… Endless positive things for this American enterprise!

Which take away food can you find in WFM?

It is the second part of this NYCTT good deal: you’ll find in WFM a Hot Bar, Salads, Pizza, Burger Bar and Deli Counter.

They are located in the same store. It is like a deli where you can buy a lot of products ready to go. Some of them have a fixed price like the hamburgers, bagels and chicken… or a rate by weight like the vegetables, meat, salads…

There is a large variety of products but with high quality.

Here are some of the different areas:

How should I pay?

Once you have finished, you can go and pay.

Like you can see in the picture below, there are 4 different lines (blue, yellow, green and red).

Don’t worry, go and pay in the line that has less people waiting. I took this picture at night, so it looks pretty empty. During the daytime, when there are more people, it is a practical system.

Indeed, once you pick your line, there is a screen showing the number of the cashier you should go towards.

There are many cashiers, so you don’t have to wait in line for to long.

What else can you find?

In most of the WFM there’s an area with restaurants.

How much are you going to spend shopping groceries?

To be honest, the prices in Whole Foods Market are higher than most supermarkets. They sell a large variety of organic and  fair trade products , food to take awayof higj quality… That’s why there is a price difference compared with other Supermarket chains.

When you have a WFM right next to your appartment or hotel, it is the best option to buy something to eat and don’t have to cook when visiting New York.

It is a store where you will find everything and with a great quality, this is something not very easy to find in the US.

So, go and shop your groceries at WFM, even if you don’t need something special. Well, it is because I like to “visit” the supermarkets of the country I’m visiting to see the products they offer.
