Domino Park, a recreation area for the whole family in Brooklyn

New York is a city that always changes and knows how to create new spaces like the Vessel in Manhattan. On the Brooklyn side, in Williamsburg, Domino Park is one of these.
Let me introduce you to this unique place with games for children, volley-ball courts, restaurants, rest areas, and above all, an incredible view.

History of Domino Park

Domino Park is a public park in the city, opened in 2018 on the ruins of the old Domino Sugar Refinery.
The factory opened in 1856 and produced sugar for 148 years until 2004. It was one of the largest refineries in the world and provided 98% of the sugar consumed in the United States!
3 of its buildings were nominated historical monuments of the city in 2007.
Then, in 2010, the New York City Council authorized the demolition of a part of the complex to create a recreational area.

What does the Park offer?

Domino Park stretches over 2 acres along the East River, offering endless scenery and activities. I describe this place from North to South.

At first you will find a space with lounge chairs, lawn … ideal to rest and tan under the sun.

Not far away, there is a playground for children. It is very original with many structures like ramps, tunnels, slides.

If you’re hungry, you can go to the Mexican-inspired Tacocina restaurant. You can eat right there or take away. It opens every day from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., except on Fridays and Saturdays, until 11 p.m.

A walkway allows you to walk along the park, enjoying the view over the city.

Further south, there are water jets to cool off during the summer, beach volleyball courts, a dog park … All this with a view over the Williamsburg and Manhattan Bridges.

When to visit Domino Park?

I recommend going during the weekend. It is when many locals take advantage of the day off to go with friends, family members, or with their partners. To see the difference, I took these photos:
– on a cloudy Tuesday in April,

– on a sunny Saturday in April.

And this picture is not mine, but that’s how this place looks at dusk.

– by walk from Williamsburg Bridge,
– with the L train of the subway with stop at Bedford Avenue, and walk about 10-15 minutes to the park.

Conclusion

This new park in Williamsburg is a true charm. In addition, it makes you go out of the beaten path, away from Manhattan to discover not so touristic venues. It deserves to be in my Travel Tips!

Memo

My fist trip to New York was in 2007 when I was working for an airline company. I was born in the US, I lived in Mexico, in Europe in between Belgium, Spain and France… Well, let’s say I know about travelling! I bring my experience of NYC to the blog, to provide the best travel tips you could imagine!
