If you are looking for an original and fun bar, you have to visit Marie’s Crisis Cafe.
It is located right in the heart of Greenwich Village, 54 feet away from the Fat Cat bar. Follow me to this unbelievable place!

What’s the history behind the Marie’s Crisis Cafe?

The bar was built in 1839, named after Marie Du Mont, an Austrian immigrant well known for her blonde hair, her voice and for selling alcohol during the prohibition era.
The name of the bar was inspired by the Crisis pamphlets too, written by Thomas Paine (an American Independence hero). In fact, in one of the bar’s wall his epitaph is written: “The world is my country, to do good is my religion, and all mankind are my brethren”.
From 1850 to 1890, this building was a wharehouse, then a gay bar. Nowadays, Marie’s Crisis Cafe is just a piano bar, where neighbors and actors meet to sing songs of Broadway and Disney shows.

We used to go to Marie’s for a long time while I was a student. Many years later, relatives came to see me so I took them to see this wonderful bar. As we walked in, it didn’t seem right. First, there were no women. Hmmmm. It dawned on us where we were. As we were leaving , the entire place started singing———we hate to see you go!!! All men!!!

Actually, there is a pianist and singalong in the bar from 5:30 PM during the week, and from 6:00 on the weekends – not 8:00 PM as the article states.

Thank you James for the information, the last time I was there the pianist arrived at 8pm. I couldn’t find more information on their Facebook page or website, so I just wrote my own experience 😉
