The Sales calendar for a great shopping in New York!!!

Sale à New York

New York is a great city for shopping and if you add sales then that’s even better!!

In shops and outlets, prices are already low compared to European prices so if you can enjoy additional savings on your trip to New York then why not?

In the United States and particularly in New York, clothes are much cheaper then in Europe. This is especially true for American brands. Therefore, it’s always interesting to spend few hours or more shopping in New York 🙂

Where can you find sales in New York?

There are 3 main locations to shop in New York and find good sales:
- On 34th Street close to Macy’s between Madison Square Garden and the Empire State Building, of course this includes Macy’s.
- On Broadway between Union Square and Canal Street.
- In Times Square between 43rd Street and 50th Street.
Also try 5th Avenue, Wall Street, Lexington Avenue and Brooklyn. Overall, these 3 main locations gather the coolest and cheapest stores in New York.
Here’s a map below to locate these 3 main locations:

Which stores in New York are offering sales?

Most stores offer sales however, most bargains are found in clothing and shoe shops.
You’ll find deals in the most famous department stores including: Century 21, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, American Eagle, Forever 21 and more.

To find additional stores, don’t hesitate to check my section on New York Shopping Tips.

In addition, you can visit well-known outlet stores. The latest are a great way to find designer clothing at unbeatable prices all year long.
Two locations are available close to NYC: Woodbury Common Outlet and Jersey Gardens Outlet.
Both outlets are located outside Manhattan, so plan to take at least half a day on your schedule to shop there.

Choice of outlets

The closest one is Jersey Garden.
However, a trip to Woodbury is an opportunity to get out of NYC on a bus and see amazing landscapes beyond the city.
Jersey Garden is an indoor outlet mall, the ideal place to shop when it’s very cold (below zero) in winter or extremely hot in summer (90 or more). As oppose to Woodbury, an outdoor mall which might be a good option if the weather is pleasant.
Both are good and have similar stores so it’s really up to you! 🙂

There is no doubt that you’ll find some great sales in these outlets, it’s really worth the trip in terms of prices.
Of course, that is if you find items that you like and fits you 🙂
It’s worth a try!!!

One last New York shopping tip during sales

It’s not really a great shopping tip but it might help you while you shop. If you’re planning to go on a shopping spree in New York then do pack basic necessary items in your suitcase or you won’t be able to bring everything! 🙂
I hope that you can travel during these dates and if you can’t, don’t worry there are always some good deals available in most stores.
Again, even if it’s not sale season, shopping in New York always has advantages and its always fun 🙂

I am visiting NYC on 22nd Nov and wondered if it would be worth going to Woodbury common on Thansgiving. What are the sales like. I have emailed Woodbury common and they advised that the opening times are 9am on thanksgiving through to 10pm on black friday. Do the sales start on the Thursday?

    • Memo says:

Hi, It would be much better to go for the Black Friday. You can find some stores on 34th St open late the night before, you can combine going there and on Black Friday, head to the outlet.

  2. Liz says:

How much sales tax is there on clothing in NYC?

    • Memo says:

      Hi Liz,

NYC.gov explains it better than me 😀

The total sales and use tax rate in New York City is 8.875%.

      This includes:
      - New York City local sales and use tax rate of 4.5%
      - New York State sales and use tax rate of 4%
      - Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District surcharge of 0.375%

There is no sales tax on an item of clothing or footwear that costs less than $110. An item of clothing or footwear that costs $110 or more is subject to the full 8.875% tax rate. Sales tax is calculated per item, so even if you buy two or more items that add up to $110 or more, you only pay tax on the items that individually cost $110 or more.

    • Memo says:

      Maybe for Halloween, yes.

      • Marco says:

Hi , what about the weekend After Columbus day (13-15 Oct)?
Less chaos and probably some good bargain left.
        What do you advice?

        • Memo says:

          Hi Marco,
Don't worry about the chaos, there's always sales during the year so you won't find more people in the stores than other days. It will be better to go during the Columbus Day weekend 😉

  4. Ledy says:

I am planning a trip to NYC this year, probably in October or November. When would be the best time for shopping in October/November? Which locations and stores would you recommend for Tommy Hilfiger, CK, Armani, Ralph Lauren etc?

    • Memo says:

      Hi Ledy,
If you want to get the best prices, you may want to go to NYC in November during the Black Friday sales!!
For the type of brands you're searching for, I recommend that you go to Jersey Gardens.

  5. Kirat says:

I am visiting NY from August 10 to October 31. When is the best time to make a trip to Woodbury Commons to make the most of the sales?

    • Memo says:

      Hi Kirat,
I will say during the Labor Day weekend (first WE of September) then you have Columbus Day Sales (October) 😉

I will be visiting New York in a week's time and I am wondering if I could get suitable clothes for the office and some casual wears. I am a woman of 48yr and wear between sizes 20 and above. really depending on the cut.

    • Memo says:

      Hi Pat,

Yes, you can find everything in NY. Your best bet is going around Union Square where there's a lot of stores like Burlington, Marshalls... Century 21 is a good option too, the one near the Lincoln Center (Upper West Side) is smaller and not so crowded.

  7. Connie says:

Thanks for the wonderful tips, i was in NYC just for a week from 25th June - 3rd July 2017 and could not get enough of its beauty and shopping, could not be able to do everything in one week time. I am planning to come back this August 25th to Sept 8th, guess the two weeks will be sufficient to do shopping and sightseeing. My questions are by that time will i be able to get summer clothes, shoes, handbags on sale prices?
    Thanks in advance

    • Memo says:

Hi Connie and welcome to the club!! You're another NYC addict!! 😀

Yes you will be able to find summer clothes by the end of August, you'll be there at the perfect dates for the Back to School sales!

Don't hesitate if I can help you planning your trip 😉

      • connie says:

Thank you so much and will keep you posted!

      • connie says:

i am still contemplating on whether i come this next week or from 4th - 15th September, will i be able to get good prices still for summer clothes? Also what about October 1st - 10th can i still find summer clothes with discount? I am from afar and need to plan well for my shopping.
Thank you so much for your support 🙂

        • Memo says:

          Hi Connie,
If you want summer clothes, the best is to como next week. In October, they start to put clothes for the next season 😉

  8. Khemmy says:

Hi. We will be visiting the US in December through first week in January for the Christmas holiday. I will want to shop for summer clothes for my kids. Do you think i will get good discounts then or you advice I get someone to help me buy them before December. Thanks.

    • Memo says:

      Hi Khemmy
I am not sure you will find summer clothes during this period of the year. The best is to go to Jersey Gardens Oulet, where I am pretty sure you will find shirts and sneakers. If you know someone living in the area, you can ask them to help you out 😉

Great article! Just what I needed. Planning a trip to NYC and want to get some shopping done. How long would it take to get through the three major locations you mentioned in your article?

Also,is it best to stay in the city itself since that's where the shopping areas are or would it make sense to stay near JFK and commute everyday to the city?
